What is the time scale for the settlement and cracking of an old stone building? I'll probably never know, because despite its claims (and other reviews), this is a book for neither beginner nor layman. This is an academic text for practicing and professional structural engineers, and makes no bones about it; the very first sentence of the preface explains that the chapters in these books were previously published separately as articles in scientific journals, and then synthesized into a whole. And, like most journal papers, this book assumes an incredibly high degree of specialized knowledge. I figured that having an engineering degree myself, I could just brush up on my statics and follow right along; sadly, that was not the case. The key thing to realize is that this is not some rehash of someone else's theories streamlined for the masses; this is *the* seminal work on how these building stay up, written by the guy who figured it out. This is not the book that references the original source, this IS the original source that other works reference. Read any other paper on the subject, and you will more than likely find this in the bibliography, or passing references to the "Heyman Theory". And, like all good niche scientific papers, it's very terse, poorly edited, and irritatingly overpriced. And while that's fine for Springer Press, you can't call your book "clear" and "lucid" and then pack it full of esoteric technical jargon. As an example, here is a except from page 8 of the introduction: "If the material of the arch of figure 1.3 is linear-elastic (or obeys any other known deformation characteristic), and if the abutments are rigid, then a unique position can be calculated for the thrust line which equilibrates the given loads (self-weight and any others specified)." It's like this right out of the gate, and only gets more dense as the chapters continue. If you can't immediately recall, say, the difference between elasticity and plasticity, or what makes a structure hyperstatic, then this book is probably out of your league no matter how many times you read each paragraph. Or maybe I'm just a dimwit, I don't know.A much better alternative (and potential workup for this book) for anyone who is technically inclined but not a licensed structural engineer is "The Science of Structural Engineering", also by the same author. It covers much of the same information, but presents it in a readable, historical context, details the evolution of how new theories replaced the old ones (and why), and has enough example diagrams to demonstrate the problems and solutions without your eyes glazing over. All that being said, however, if you are interested in this subject either professionally or in passing, you will likely have to get this book at some point no matter what: apart from being the first, it's essentially the only.

There's no doubting this is an authoratative book. It's based on an article that first appeared in a professional journal, and I feel that is its real audience. I found myself in trouble shortly after the introduction, despite a couple of mechanics courses in graduate school. You may have better luck, but I think only practicing structural engineers will be able to enjoy this book.

Another excellent book concerning the building of a cathedral. Structural engineering 101 is a helpful prerequisite.

A great book that everyone should read.in that it provides the reader with a good understanding about the structural behavior of these buildings,.

Finally a book that is not dumbed down excessively. The book is highly technical for an average non engineering type to read, but it's about as simple as it can truly be given its goal, which is structural analysis. If you are interested in a book talking about beautiful masonry, and the inspirations and motivations of the builders, this is NOT your book. It is a engineering look at the state of many of these structures and how the designers accounted for stresses due to wind loadings, foundation settling, and the tensile, shear, and compressive forces inherent in building by using geometric rules handed down since Vitruvius. Heymen also explains while building using geometry works for stone and how all of the above stresses and forces were contained within the masonry ensuring its long term stability. He also explains how modern engineers are working to ensure these structures continue to stand. If you are an engineering student interested in history and historical buildings this book is a must have.

This is definitely a very well written book concerning structural engineering applied to medieval type of buildings. The practice at that time was driven by principles of geometry and physical proportion, and generally speaking masonry structures work well under this scheme. The Stone Skeleton is a book that will catch the interest of students and even professional structural engineers who enjoy learning about both gothic cathedrals and buildings designed in a similar way. A structural analysis textbook may come in handy should someone wishes to go deeper into the mathematical concepts of elastic versus plastic structural analysis and the design of domes and vaults. Other structural elements such as piers, pinnacles, flying buttresses and subjects such as cracking and settlements are also briefly discussed.

A great beginners book on solid stone structures of magnificent proportions. More an engineers book than a layman, the structural aspects of how piling stones on top of each other can withstand bombing, when steel structures can not. I don't think I'll ever walk into a cathedral again without marveling at the fact that the stones don't just fall down! It is amazing information that awes you and gives you a real appreciation for the art of the stone architecture where the structure drove the design - not the other way around.

this work covers quite thouroughly the mathematics and mechanics of arches. It spends particular time on construction in the Gothic cathedrals including the barrel vault, cross vault, dome, and flying butress. It is beautifully illustrated and it presents the basic concepts as well as giving a quite extenisive theoretical analysis. A good book for anyone familiar with masonry and an essential for anyone involved in repairing and maintaining Cathedrals and other large stone structures.
